Villarsia capitata Nees ex Lehm.
- Lehmann, J.G.C. 1845. Plantae Preissianae. v. 1. p. 364-365.
Foliis reniformi-orbiculatis repando-subcrenatis subtus porosis cauleque erecto foliato glabris, floribus capitatis, capitulis involucratis pedunculisque villosis. Leaves reniform-orbiculate, repand-subcrenate, glabrous, porous underneath. Stem erect, leaved. Flowers in a head, headlets involucrate, with villous peduncles.
In paludosis ad flumen Canning, Perth, Novembri a. 1841. Herb. Preiss. No. 1956. In marshes at Canning River, Perth, November 1841. Herb. Preiss. No. 1956.
Radix fibrosa. Caules 2-3 ex una radice, 6 poll. longi, erecti, teretes, laeves et glabri, simplices aut dissite ramosi et tunc foliosi. Folia radicalia plura longius petiolata, petiolis teretibus basi dilatatis; lamina 6 lin. lata, 4 lin. alta, basi haud profunde cordata, caetero ambitu rotundata, crenato-lobata aut repando-crenata, crassiuscula, viridia, subtus punctis intrusis sparsis porosa. Folia caluina 2-3, brevius petioloata, ramulum aut pedunculum ex angulo proferentia; petiolus basi vaginans. Pedunculi ½-1 poll. longi, laxe villosi, nudi. Capitula in pedunculi caulisve apice solitaria, subglobosa, Piso duplo majora, multiflora, suffulta bracteis duabus suboppositis latis amplectentibus, quarum altera capitulo saepe paulo altior foliolo subrotundo, altera (superior) mucronulo terminatur. Bracteola ovalis, obtusa, villosa sub singulo flore, membranacea, calycem aequans. Flores sessiles. Calyx 1½ lin. longus, dense villosus, praesertim ad basin, 5-partitus, laciniis lanceolatis subulato-acuminatis, acumine minus villoso. Corolla calyce brevior, rotata, lutea, 5-partita, laciniis ovalibus obtusis, apice incurvis, basin versus subcuneatis. Antherae in apice tubi brevissimi subsessiles, lineari-oblongae, basi sagittatae, locellis parallelis. Stylus longitudine ovarii; stigma bilamellatum. Root fibrous. Stems 2-3 from one root, 6 in (15 cm) long, erect, smooth and glabrous, simple or branched randomly, in which case they bear leaves. Radical leaves many, rather longly petiolate. Petioles smooth, dilated at the base. Leaf blades 6 lin (12 mm) broad, 4 lin (8 mm) deep, not deeply cordate at the base, rounded at the opposite margin, crenate-lobed or repand-crenate, somewhat thick, green, porous underneath with sparse intrusions. Cauline leaves 2-3, shortly petiolate, growing at an angle to the branch or peduncle. Petiole sheathing at the base. Peduncle 0.5-1 in (12-25 mm) long, smoothly villous, bare. Flower headlets solitary on the peduncle or at the apex of the stem, subglobose, twice as large as a pea (?), many-flowered, supported by two embracing, subopposite bracts, one of which is often a little deeper than the headlet, with a subrotund leaflet, and the other (higher) terminates in a sharp point. Bracteole oval, obtuse, villous beneath a single flower, membranaceous, of equal length as the calyx. Flowers sessile. Calyx 0.5 lin (3 mm) long, densely villous, particularly at the base, 5-parted, laciniate, lanceolate, subulate-acuminate, at the tip less villous. Corolla shorter than the calyx, rotate, yellow, 5-parted, with obtuse oval fringes, incurved at the tip, subcuneate at the base. Anthers subsessile at the apex of the quite short tube, linear-oblong, sagittate at the base, with parallel chambers. Style of the same length as the ovary. Stigma bilamellate. Capsule shorter than the calyx, oval, compressed, crowned with the style, membranaceous, probably not dehiscent, unilocular. Seed receptacles parietal, opposite, scarcely extended to the middle of the wall. Seeds 10-12, discoid, immarginate, obliquely subsinuate at the hilum as in the remainder.
Alieni aliquid habet haec species, sed plerisque iisque gravioribus characteribus cum charactere generis congruit. This species has something foreign, but by very many of these more serious characters it agrees with the character of the genus.
