Nymphoides elliptica Aston
- Aston, H.I. 1984. Nymphoides triangularis and N. elliptica (Menyanthaceae): two new Australian species. Muelleria 5: 265-270.
Plantae annuae. Laminae foliorum (15-) 30-85 x (10-) 20-60 mm, anguste usque late ellipticae vel ovato-ellipticae, singulae sinu basali profundo acuto. Inflorescentia fasciculum densum pedicellorum formans, a folio singulari subtenta; petiolus folii subtendentis plerumque laminam aequans vel longior. Flores heterostyli, (4)5-partiti. Corolla 14-25 mm diametro, alba vel pallide rosea vel pallide malvino-rosea, fauce flava; lobi duabus alis latis lateralibus praediti (alae integrae nisi crenulae vel dentes ad apicem vel apicem versus), et proxime super basin fimbriis conspicuis tranversis papillarum tenuium ornati; tubus fasciculo pilorum subtilium pluriramantium instructus (pili 0.8-1.3 mm longi, secundum lineam mediam quisque inter bases filamentorum). Stylus florum longistylium c. 1.5-2.5 mm longus. Stigma florum longistylium latum, deltoideum usque rhomboideum. Capsula ellipsoidea usque late ellipsoidea. Semina 5-15 per capsulam, paene globosa sed parce usque moderatim lateraliter compressa, 1-1.3 (-1.5) x 1-1.3 x 0.85-1.1 mm, maturitate atrofusca, omnino foveolata, rugis reticulatis inter foveolas (foveolae atque rugae tuberculis brevibus tenuibus obtusis omnino dense velatae); caruncula basalis, rotunda, pallida, crassa, conspicua. Annual plant. Laminae of leaves (15-) 30-85 x (10-) 20-60 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic or ovate-elliptic, single, with a deep, acute, basal sinus. Inflorescence forming a dense fascicle of pedicels, subtended by a single leaf. Petiole of the subtending leaf mostly equaling the lamina or longer. Flowers heterostylous, (four- to) five-parted. Corolla 14-25 mm in diameter, white or pale rose of pale malvino-rose, throat yellow. Lobes equipped with two broad, lateral wings (wings entire unless crenulae or teeth at the apex or [versus] the apex), and nearby above the base adorned with conspicuous, transverse fringes of thin hairs. Tube with a fascicle of subtle, many-branching hairs (hairs 0.8-1.3 mm long, each along the median line between the bases of filaments). Style of longistyle flowers c. 1.5-2.5 mm long. Stigma of longistyle flowers broad, deltoid to rhomboid. Capsule ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid. Seeds 5-15 per capsule, almost globose but perhaps even moderately laterally compressed, 1.0-1.3 (-1.5) x 1.0-1.3 x 0.85-1.1 mm, dark cloudy at maturity, on the whole foveolate, with reticulate ridges between depressions (depressions and ridges on the whole densely covered with short, thin, obtuse tuberculae). Caruncle basal, round, pale, thick, conspicuous.
Ob petiolum longum folii peculiaris (quod inflorescentiam subtendit) et ob pilos longos subtiles ramificatos N. triangularis similis, sed abilli specie differt: seminum numero sculpturaque, loborum corollae figura, styli longitudine et stigmatis forma in floribus longistylosis, atque laminae typicae foliorum forma. On account of the long petiole of the peculiar leaf (which subtends the inflorescence), and on account of the long, subtle, branched hairs similar to N. triangularis, but differs from that species: in the number and sculpture of seeds, in the figure of corolla lobes, in the length of the style and form of the stigma in longistyle flowers, and in the form of the typical lamina of leaves.
