Sepalis corolla 3plo brevioribus, corolla albae lobis margine undulato-ciliatis, disco crista longitudinali, versus basin corona fimbriata et glandula solitaria pedicellata auctis, stylo abbreviato bilobo, seminibus subsolitariis muricatis. - v. s. sp. in herb. Willd. et Hook. Sepals three times shorter than the corolla. Corolla with white lobes, undulate-ciliate at the margin, crest with a longitudinal disc, furrow at the base with a fimbriate crown and solitary, pedicellate gland. Style two-lobed, abbreviated. Seeds subsolitary, muricate. - v. s. species in the herbaria of Willdenow and Hooker.
Adumbr. Radices cylindricae, saepius fibrillis patentibus, plumosae, petiolares numerosae. Folia, petiolo pollicari proprio a cyma dissita, 3-6" longa et lata, hinc minora, auriculis saepius subapproximatis parallelis, nervis obsoletis palmatis, supra asperiuscula, subtus glandulis minutis ipsarum diametro quater distantibus obsita, demum aspera et lacunosa. Flores circiter 12. Sepala 5 ovato-lanceolata, capsula 2-3plo breviora. Corollae diam. circiter 9"': loborum discus juxta cristam nudus: glandulae et epipetalae et ovarium cingentes flavae. Ovarium subglobosum. Capsula mono-disperma!, seminibus raphe conspicus notatis. Outline. Roots cylindrical, rather often with evident fibers, downy, petioles numerous. Leaves, emitted from the cyme with a single petiole of 1 in [2.5 cm], 3-6 in [7-15 cm] long and wide, or less, rather often with subapproximate, parallel auricles, with faint palmate veins, rather rough above, underneath with tiny glands, [ipsarum diametro quater distantibus obsita], at length rough and lacunose. Flowers about 12. Sepals 5, ovate-lanceolate, 2-3 times shorter than the capsule. Corolla diameter around 9 lin [19 mm]: disc of the lobes bare, next to the crest: glands both epipetalous and yellow, surrounding the ovary. Ovary subglobose. Capsule one- or two-seeded, seeds marked by a conspicuous seam.
Lusus. In tota sectione variant foliorum magnitudo, forma, insertio, ex aetate indumentum, auricularum directio, florum et radicum copia. Lusus. In the whole section the size of the leaves, their form, insertion, indumentum from age, direction of auricles, supply of flowers and roots all vary.

Foliis cordatis undulato-crenulatis, petiolis floriferis 1floris, laciniis corollae margine crispis medio cristatis, staminibus 5 alternis sterilibus, seminibus compressis. Leaves cordate, undulate-crenulate. Floriferous petioles one-flowered. Lobes of the corolla curled at the margin, crested in the middle. Stamens five, alternate, sterile. Seeds compressed.

Menyanthes cristata Roxb.
- Roxburgh, W. 1798. Plants of the coast of Coromandel. v. 2 p. 3-4. t. 105.

Antara-jamara of the Telingas.

Roots annual, fibrous.
Leaves radical, petioled, hearted, with large, rounded, posterior lobes: lobes overlap a little; margins waved, smooth, above green, with a purplish tinge; size very various, the larger are from four to six inches long.
Petiole round, length various; on the upper side, about two inches below the leaf, there are tubercles which bear flowers, other leaves, and roots; the old leaf and the parent petiole decaying, leaves a new plant, each petiole in succession doing the same.
Peduncles many, from the above mentioned tubercles of the petiole, one-flower'd, and of length sufficient to raise the flowers a little above the water, when expanded; afterwards they bend under water, and there ripen their seeds.
Flowers pure white, about an inch in diameter.
Calyx five-leaved: leaflets broad-lanced, permanent.
Corol one-petal'd: divisions of the border oblong, expanding, with broad membranaceous, waved, curl'd, ragged, margins; down the middle of each there runs a ridge or wing, exactly similar to half of one of the divisions: no hair on the flowers.
Nectary triple: exterior: white, ramous filaments, crown the mouth of the tube of the corol, as in Nerium; middle: five beautiful yellow, glandulous bodies, nearly fill the mouth of the tube, standing alternately with the filaments; interior: five hairy yellow bodies, surround the base of the germ.
Filaments inserted into the tube of the corol near its base.
Anthers oval.
Style short.
Stigma two-cleft: segments large and lobed.
Seeds a little compress'd, rugged.
Receptacles opposite, running down the inside of the capsule.

A native of tanks, or pools of fresh water, where it floats, often not reaching the bottom with its roots. Flowering time the wet and cold season.
