Villarsia crenata (F.Muell.) F.Muell.
- von Mueller, F. 1864. Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae. v. 4. p. 127-128.
Fluitans, glabra, foliis crenatis cordato- v. renato- orbiculatis cordatisve, segmentis calycis dimidio corollae flavae brevioribus, lobis corollae intus longitudinaliter lato-cristatis margine et fauce fimbriatis, stigmate membranis quinque fimbriato-laceris alato, glandulis hypogynis fimbriatis, capsula calycem semisuperante evalvi, seminibus ovatis laevigatis vix carinatis. Floating, glabrous. Leaves crenate, cordate- or reniform-orbiculate. Calyx segments half as short as the yellow corolla. Corolla lobe longitudinally broad-crested within, fimbriate at the margin and throat. Stigma winged with five fimbriate-fringed membranes. Hypogynous glands fimbriate. Capsule not valved, somewhat surpassing the calyx. Seeds ovate, smooth, scarcely keeled.
In paludibus, lacubus fluviisque Australiae tropicae et extratropicae passim; e. c., Murray, Darling et Edwards River, Murumbidgee, Wimmera, Mitta-Mitta, Suttor, Burdekin, Albert, Limmenbight et Roper River. In swamps, lakes and rivers of tropical and [passim] subtropical Australia.
Radix e fasciculo fibrillarum validarum constans. Caules satis longi, angulati, ad nodos foliati et passim fibrilliferi. Folia 1-3" longa, semper distincte crenata (etiamsi crenae exsiccatione partim abolescunt), palmatinervia, utrinque viridia, venis imperfecte prominentibus reticulatis percursa, supra laevia, petiolo sesquipollicari v. modice longiore passim subpedali semper semiterete plus minusve canaliculato basi vaginante praedita. Umbellae axillares alaresque, sessiles v. breviter pedunculatae, 6-12-florae. Pedicelli saepe ad 3" longi, 1"' crassi, sensim in calycem ampliati. Bracteolae basilares ovato-lanceolatae, acuminatae, 3-4"' longe. Calycis segmenta angusto-lanceolata. Corolla tenerrima, mox deliquescens; partitiones ellipticae saltem semipollicares, fimbriis circa 1"' longis ornatae; crista in marginis modum fimbriata. Antherae angusto-lineares, sagittatae, lineam parum excedentes, demum recurvatae. Stylus crassus, brevis. Stigmatis alae verticales sive longitudinales, segmentis calycis alternae, luteae, linea paulo breviores, supra medium liberae. Glandulae in floris fundo alis stigmatis oppositae, fuscae, membranula 1/2"' longa ciliari-fimbriata et plerumque biloba terminatae. Capsula ellipsoideo-ovata, acuta, circiter 5"' longa. Semina lucida, paene 1/3"' metientia, dilute fulva. Rhizome [constans] out of a fascicle of [validarum] fibers. Stems long enough, angled, leaved at the nodes and perhaps bearing fibers. Leaves 1-3 in (2-8 cm) long, always distinctly crenate (even if the crenae are partly diminished by drying), palmately veined, green [utrinque], veins imperfectly prominent, reticulate [percursa], smooth above. Petiole 1.5 in (4 cm) or slightly longer, perhaps almost a foot long, always semiterete, more or less grooved, sheathing at the base [praedita]. Umbels axillary and [alares], sessile or shortly pedunculate, 6-12-flowered. Pedicels often to 3 in (8 cm) long, 1 lin (2 mm) thick, [sensim] [ampliati] into the calyx. Bractioles [basilares] ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, 3-4 lin (6-9 mm) long. Calyx segments narrow-lanceolate. Corolla [tenerrima], soon [deliquescens]; partitions elliptical, up to 1.5 in (4 cm) long, ornate with fringes about 1 lin (2 mm) long. Crest fimbriate [modum] on the margin. Anthers narrow-linear, sagittate, [partim] over one line (2 mm), [demum] recurved. Style thick, short. Vertical wings of the stigma longitudinal, alternating with segments of the calyx, yellow, 1 lin (2 mm) or shorter, free above the midpoint. Glands at the base of the flower opposite the stigma wings, dark. Membranes ½ lin (1 mm) ciliate-fimbriate and mostly terminating in two lobes. Capsule ellipsoid-ovate, acute, around 5 lin (11 mm) long. Seeds [lucida], measuring almost 0.3 lin (1 mm), faintly yellow.
Aliae hujus generis species Australianae, quas cognosco, sequuntur: V. parnassifolia R.Br., quae eadem recte judicante Grisebachio ac V. reniformis; V. albiflora F.Muell.; V. latifolia (Labill.) Benth.; V. capitata Nees; V. geminata R.Br., quae in stagnis subalpinis montium Munyang Mountains rarius, in locis minus elevatis Australiae felicis et Novae Austro-Cambriae frequentius obvenit; V. nymphaeaifolia C.Fraser, quam in Australia orientali calidiore et boreali et boreali-centrali ample dispersam notavi, nunquam autem ex Australia occidentali accepi; V. minima (F.Muell.) F.Muell.; V. exigua (F.Muell.) F.Muell.; V. Gunnii (Hook.f.) Hook.f.. Other species of this genus in Australia, of which I know, follow: V. parnassifolia R.Br. and V. reniformis, which Grisebach rightly judged to be identical; V. albiflora F.Muell.; V. latifolia (Labill.) Benth.; V. capitata Nees; V. geminata R.Br., which occurs rarely in subalpine marshes of the Munyang Mountains, more frequently in lower elevations of Australia and New Austro-Cambria [?]; V. nymphaeaifolia C.Fraser, which I have noted is amply distributed in warmer eastern, and in north and north-central Australia, however I have never collected it out of western Australia; V. minima (F.Muell.) F.Muell.; V. exigua (F.Muell.) F.Muell.; V. Gunnii (Hook.f.) Hook.f..
Species of section Limnanthemum hold together as do the creeping, congeneric species of Ipomoea . I have noted about V. nymphaeifolia what follows in the diary of the Gregorian expedition: "Sinus of the leaves acute, reddish surface underneath; Corolla lobes white at the margin and above the midpoint white-bearded; yellow and bare deeper. Filaments white. Stigma two-parted. Petioles semiterete. Pedicels cylindrical."

Limnanthemum crenatum F.Muell.
- von Mueller, F. 1855. Transactions of the Philosophical Institute of Victoria. v. 1. p. 17.
Leaves cordate-orbiculate, crenate, obsoletely palmatinerved, above even, beneath densely glandulose; segments of the calyx narrow-lanceolate, less than half as long as the corolla, exceeding but little the length of the capsule; segments of the yellow corolla on the margin and orifice fimbriate, inside longitudinally broad-cristate; style thick, abbreviate; stigma with five lacerate wings; hypogynous glands fimbriate; capsule polyspermaous; seeds ovate, laevigate, hardly keeled.

In tranquil bends of the Murray river, Murrumbidgee, and Mitta Mitta, and in the nearest lakes and lagoons.

A most handsome, and, with regard to its crenate leaves and the structure of its stigma, equally singular species.
