Research Interests

Bryophytes (Mosses); Evolution; Systematics; Developmental Morphology; Anatomy. I am particularly interested in the development and morphological evolution of moss structures, such as the peristome teeth, stomata, calyptra and meristematic regions.

Master's Thesis

My thesis entitled "Phylogenetic Analyses of the Timmiaceae (Bryophyta; Musci) Inferred from Sequence Data and a Developmental Study of the Peristome-forming Region of Timmia megapolitana (Timmiaceae)", consisted of two main components. Using DNA sequence data from two chloroplast and one nuclear genomic region I examined the phylogenetic relationships among the six established taxa in the Timmiaceae. Additionally I documented the initial cellular divisions that form the peristome teeth, focusing on the alignment of cell walls in the inner peristome forming layer (IPL).

Undergraduate Research

During undergrad I worked in Jim Hickey's lab at Miami University (Oxford, OH) studying Isoetes. There I assisted in the description of a new species of Isoetes (Isoetes tennesseensis Luebke & Budke). Also I carried out an analysis of this new species of Isoetes using anatomical and morphological techniques.
