Black bear volunteer opportunities in CT - Paul Rego has asked for volunteers to do some bear work this spring, possibly as an internship for school credit. Work will mainly consist of checking bait stations and trapping black bears, on weekends. This is an excellent opportunity to gain some experience in the field and gain a professional reference for your resume. Summer Camp Naturalist Positions (2) at the Audubon Center at Bent of the River in Southbury Location: Audubon Center Bent of the River<http://www.audubonct.org/>Supervisor: Chris Cohen, Education Program Manager.Dates of Employment: June 23-August 15, 2008, M-F 8:00 AM-3:00 PM, (includes staff training). No camp July 4th. Qualifications: Knowledge of local ecology and natural history; college coursework in biology, ecology, or related field preferred. Experience working with children necessary. Ability and desire to work outdoors and lead nature hikes. Enthusiasm for nature and teaching. Must have current immunizations/ medical forms. Summer camp naturalists will be required to participate in a training week prior to the start of camp that will involve learning local ecology, hiking trails with Audubon naturalists and planning the 7 week camp curriculum. Must be willing to obtain CPR/First Aid certification during training.Responsibilities: Planning and teaching week-long nature programs for small groups of middle school students in grades 4-8. Activities may include simple science investigations, nature hikes, environmental games and crafts developed under the direction of the Day Camp Director and Education Specialist at Bent of the River. Each summer camp week will have a different theme that will guide curriculum development and will include a special guest scientist or speaker.Salary Detail: $350-400/week commensurate with experience. Rabbit Resource Assistants: Dates of Employment: May 2008 – November 2008 Closing Date: April 10, 2008 Positions are available to assist with a study on distribution, movements, and population dynamics of cottontail rabbits with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Wildlife Division. Locations: Franklin Wildlife Management Area in N. Franklin and Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area, Burlington, CT. Job Description: Study will consist of capturing, radio-collaring, ear tagging, and monitoring cottontail rabbits throughout the state. Tissue samples and fecal pellets will be collected for DNA analysis and some habitat and vegetation sampling will be required. Entering, analyzing, summarizing data, and preparing reports also will be required. Qualifications: Background in natural resource science is preferred and possession of a valid drivers license is required. Individuals should be organized, able to coordinate efforts with volunteers and co-workers, and have the ability to work independently. Experience with capture of small mammals, radio-telemetry, and computers is preferable. Hours: 35-40 hours per week. Some evenings will be required. Salary: $10-$12 per hour depending on experience (no benefits). Vehicle and gas will be provided.
