Birding hotspots of UConn and surrounding areas

Birding small.png

This booklet contains a selection of birding hotspots on the UConn campus and in the surrounding area. It includes information about the most common birds in the area, as well as the type of habitat they can be found in. The booklet also includes directions to the different hotspots, the habitats that can be found there, and list of common and uncommon birds seen at that spot. My project is a basic tool for anyone who would like to start birding. - Kali Block

Sound guide to the birds of campus

SoundGuide small.png

This UConn bird sound guide is designed to be an easy to use and accessible tool for beginner birders to allow them to become familiar with bird song. The guide is complete with phonetic representations of bird songs that are common throughout campus, and is categorized based on the habitat the listener is in and then moves into the style of song the listener is trying to identify. It is my hope that this guide will encourage students and faculty members to become more interested in and appreciative of the spectacular birds around UConn. - Meredith Kuzel

Red-winged Blackbirds on campus video

RWBlackbird.jpg

Red-winged blackbirds are abundant throughout America, including right here here on UCONN's campus. This video shows the interaction of the red-winged blackbird with the males and females of it's own species and the territorial antics with other species. It also shows how both the male and female red-winged blackbirds care for their young, select a mate and defend their territory. - Dennikeya Randolph

Bird note segments for radio broadcast

N Mockingbird.png

I made a UCONN version of the NPR program BirdNote a program that helps educate the public about birds, birding and culture influenced by avian species. My program is called UCONN AvianSong; there is an episode about red winged black birds and where they can be found on campus. And there is another episode about mourning doves and some of the cultural influences and also how to find them on campus. - David Zebrowski

UConn Open your eyes brochure

UConn Open Your eyes is a project through a brochure meant to aid in opening the eyes of students, faculty, and visitors to the animal diversity that exists on campus. The brochure presents the idea that we underestimate our surrounding areas such as the Swan Lake, Horsebarn Hill, and the UConn forest (Fenton). There is more than what meets the eye at first glance, often more observations open up the viewer's eyes to things they did not notice before. Also included is a map with places to visit around campus linked with animals that could be seen, if you want to explore and get involved. - Nino & Almedina

Open your eyes to the nature around you video

This video illustrates the importance of studying animal behavior. Its objective is to demonstrate why you should and how you can “open your eyes to the nature around you.” Overall, an increase in awareness to your surroundings can truly change the way you see the world! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWgh_A46QME&feature=youtu.be Shawn & Christine

Methods for observing animal behavior brochure and poster

This project is a basic outline of the methods of studying animal behavior. It tells you how to get started studying animal behavior and highlights how to choose which study methods to use when observing different types of animals. - Olivia & Benjamin

iNaturalist and UConn Nature brochure

The goal of our project is to get our community involved and invested in local nature. We are making an informational and interactive brochure explaining the benefits of registering for iNaturalist. We will be explaining how and who can use iNaturalist as well as some of the most commonly found species around the UConn Storrs campus. We are including a map with marked locations of where the species can be found. Finally, we started a uconn nature iNatualist project to encourage students, faculty, and nature enthusiasts to begin recording and sharing observations. http://www.inaturalist.org/projects/uconn-nature - Tanner & Ali
