General Info
The labs will follow the syllabus outlined on the Biology of the Algae HuskyCT site. Lab handouts will be posted there at least on week ahead of the lab.
Please prepare for active lab participation by reading the material before the lab.
Lab 1 - August 29
Introduction. Field trip around campus to collect microalgae using a plankton net.
FIELD TRIP - September 6
New London low tide 1:48PM of 0.04ft.
Lab 2 - September 8
Introduction to Brown Algae
Lab 3 - September 15
More browns! Identified sporangia from fresh sorus tissue of various kelps, looked at life cycles and key features of various genera. Also made colorful algal beads from sodium alginate (a brown algal extract), recipe courtesy of PSA.
