Animals
I'll let you in on a little secret: young tree frogs often ride stag beetles into battle against their sworn enemies, the orb weaver spiders. The beetle will use its jaws to rip apart the web, while the frog attempts to either eat the spider, or knock it off the web. This is completely true and the photo was totally not staged at all. (Brigette Zacharczenko)
A beautiful green tree python from the Bronx Zoo. (Kaitlin Gallagher)
I had been birding heavily in the Machu Picchu area for 3 days and had just about given up on finding a Long-tailed Sylph. It was my last morning and I was photographing tanagers at a feeder when suddenly I looked up and sitting directly in front of me was this male sylph. It was so close I had to zoom out to 100 mm in order to get its body in the frame. I was too close to capture the full extent of its awesome tail, but I’m not complaining. (Morgan Tingley)
Plants
Pretty in pink: Protea punctata in Swartberg Pass. So wet. (Nora Mitchell)
