Hi all:

I would appreciate your assistance in making students aware of Mote

Marine Laboratory's [MML] 2005 Research Experiences for Undergraduates

[REU] Program.

Overview

Each summer, Mote Marine Laboratory (MML) hosts a 10-week program

focused on providing research experiences in estuarine science to 8-10

advanced undergraduate students. Students are paired with MML scientists

and develop and complete an independent research project related to their

mentors research interests. Students gain experience in science

communication by presenting the results of their independent project in a

manuscript-style research paper and orally at a laboratory-wide research

symposium. Students attend research seminars, discussion groups on career

skills in science, and field trips to local marine science research and

education centers. Students also have the opportunity to present their

research findings at professional conferences. There will be 2-3 positions

for REU students in Mote's Center for Shark Research during 2005.

The 2005 REU session will focus on major threats to estuaries such as

aquatic pollution, natural toxins, habitat alteration, and coral reef

decline. Information about mentors, research topics, dates, and

application procedures are posted on the REU web site

(www.mote.org/~jimg/reu.htm). Applications are due on February 15, 2005.
