Like we have done in the past, we will be hosting 2-3 summer
interns in
our lab this
summer. I expect my students this summer
to be working on
the movement
patterns and habitat selection of rock sole or on the
temperature
effects on behavior of sablefish or walleye pollock. In
addition
other researchers at HMSC will be hosting another 10-15 interns.
If you have any good students that might want to spend the summer
on the
Oregon coast studying marine science, I would like to hear from
them.
I think that the program here is both academically strong and
enjoyable. All interns work directly with a faculty
advisor and have
their own
project designed to be completed during their residency. Many
of these
projects are published with the advisor and can used as Senior
Theses projects at their home institution. Newport is a small community
and interns
are welcomed into many social activities with faculty and
staff. All internships are paid and shared-housing
(with other interns)
is provided
here on campus.
Students should be a Jr. or Sr, but we would consider exceptional
Sophomores. Of course minority candidates are especially
encouraged to
apply, but the
funding is not exclusive to minorities.
I am also
interested
in students with a serious interest in fisheries or marine
science.
There are several funding mechanisms available, so it is best if
students
specifically interested in the Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program
(advised by myself and Cliff Ryer) send a note to me so I can help steer
them to the
right progam.
The details of the programs and information
about other
advisors is posted on these websites:
The deadline for the HMSC-REU program is coming up (Feb 22), they
