Fish Culturist Position

Natural Resource Specialist I
Location: King
& Queen Fish Cultural Station
King and Queen County, Virginia
Expected Hiring Range: $18,026
- $19,829*
Salary Range:
$18,026 - $36,995
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
This position is assigned to the King and Queen State Fish
Hatchery
under the
direct supervision of a Hatchery Superintendent. Perform
daily and
seasonal culture, harvest, spawning, distribution, and
transport
of fish during all life stages. Maintain
and monitor rearing
units; feed
and sample fish; collect data; maintain records. Administer
prophylactic and therapeutic chemical treatments to fish under the
supervision
of the Hatchery Superintendent or his designee.
Maintain
buildings,
grounds and equipment, including purchase of materials
necessary
for maintenance; fabricate specialized fish cultural equipment;
and perform
some semi-skilled trades functions. Maintain cordial
relationships with constituents and staff.
Qualification Guide
A working knowledge of techniques used for the culture, stocking,
and
transportation of warm water fish species, and knowledge of construction
and
maintenance techniques. Demonstrated
ability to interpret and
communicate
effectively with the general public through individual and
small-group
situations. The ability to supervise the work of part-time
employees;
to perform manual labor including moderate to heavy lifting, in
and
out-of-doors, in and around water and in varying climatic conditions;
to perform
minor mechanical repairs; to operate and maintain power tools,
and small
gasoline powered equipment.
Graduation from high school, or possession of a general education
diploma;
possession of, or eligibility for, a valid Virginia driver's
license;
and related work experience. College training in fisheries
management,
aquaculture, or a related field may substitute for some of the
required
experience.

Broader and more responsible
experience in
wildlife management, trades/utilities, or leadership
indicating
possession of more comprehensive technical, interpersonal and
organizational competencies is required for progression through the
series.
